👨‍🍳 Cooking Instructions

Full recipe instructions for preparing Bisi Bele Bath

🔥 Prep

  • Rinse the 200 g Raw Rice and 100 g Toor Dal separately under running water until the water runs clear; soak them together in water for 15 minutes.
  • Chop the 200 g Mixed Vegetables (carrots, beans, peas, potatoes) into uniform bite-sized cubes.
  • Soak the tamarind paste in 2 tbsp warm water and extract the pulp; discard any fibers or seeds.
  • Measure out 3 tbsp Bisi Bele Bath Powder, 2 tsp Salt, and 1000 ml Water and keep ready.
  • Halve the 12 pcs Cashew Nuts and set aside.
  • Keep 3 tbsp Ghee, 1 tsp Mustard Seeds, and 10 pcs Curry Leaves within reach for tempering.

🔥 Cook

  • 1. Drain the soaked rice and dal. In a pressure cooker, heat 1 tbsp Ghee over medium heat for 1 minute.
  • 2. Add the drained rice and dal; sauté for 2 minutes until the grains are coated with ghee and turn slightly opaque.
  • 3. Pour in 1000 ml Water, add the chopped 200 g Mixed Vegetables, 3 tbsp Bisi Bele Bath Powder, 2 tsp Salt, and the extracted tamarind pulp. Stir well to combine.
  • 4. Secure the pressure cooker lid and cook on high heat until the first whistle sounds, then reduce to low heat and cook for 10 minutes.
  • 5. Turn off the heat and allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes before opening the lid.
  • 6. Mash the cooked mixture gently with the back of a ladle to achieve a creamy, porridge-like consistency. If too thick, add ½ cup hot water and adjust salt.
  • 7. In a small tadka pan, heat the remaining 2 tbsp Ghee over medium heat for 30 seconds.
  • 8. Add 1 tsp Mustard Seeds and let them splutter for 10 seconds.
  • 9. Add the 10 pcs Curry Leaves and 12 pcs Cashew Nuts; fry for 1 minute until the cashews turn golden and the curry leaves crisp.
  • 10. Pour the hot tempering immediately over the cooked Bisi Bele Bath and mix thoroughly.

🔥 Serve

  • Spoon the Bisi Bele Bath into individual serving bowls while hot.
  • Drizzle a teaspoon of fresh ghee on top of each portion for added richness.
  • Serve with a side of crispy papad, coconut chutney, or plain yogurt to balance the spices.
  • Accompany with fried vadams or plain raita for a traditional South Indian meal experience.
